Notes to Self

ft. my still-developing artistic skills

1. Let people into your process. I’ve always been reluctant to tell people my hopes and plans, because what if I don’t live up to my word? It’s scary to share and not be one hundred percent sure I can carry them out. Anyway, this week I had two specific instances where people I’d reluctantly let into the process encouraged me and helped me see the way forward just by caring and discussing it with me. It was overwhelming actually. It helped me realize how much I need others. I pride myself on being strong, on not ‘burdening’ others, but I haven’t gotten this far alone, and I’m finally realizing I won’t get the rest of the way alone either. It’s uncomfortable to open up, but whenever I do (to trusted caring people) it turns out to be what I need.

2. Don’t give up on people. There’s this idea that if someone’s not serving us, pushing us toward our goals and dreams, we should move on. I agree that toxic relationships aren’t good and we do well to leave them behind. But I can’t agree to ridding our lives of people because they’re imperfect, because they struggle too, because they’re taking more than they’re giving in this moment. We’re called to love first, and love always. Perhaps it isn't best to be close friends with someone who is negative, or sapping our energy, but I believe love gives everyone another chance. Take time to hear the other person, and what they’re going through. Conflicts can be resolved; it’s possible to work through things and be stronger for it. Maybe these people in our lives are actually gifts to develop us in ways that couldn’t be possible otherwise. Don’t give up on people, because we need each other.

3. Take time to disconnect, sit outside, enjoy the sunshine, and get off technology. I sat in the sunshine this morning, and it was amazing to feel the warmth. Spring is coming! Every week I have to wait a couple of hours in town to pick up my sister from work. I drive to a park and read a book or write usually. I sit in the car, which is justifiable through winter. But when there’s warmth and sunshine, I still don’t want to get out of the car, because it’s my comfort zone. It takes effort for me to sit and read in front of whoever is at the park, even though I know they’re not paying attention to me. But this week, I did it, and it was wonderful: the fresh air, the friendly water birds, the creek right in front of me, and even the conversations happening around me. I decided it’s worth stretching myself for. We’re made to breathe and enjoy the journey, and, wow, it feels good.

What have you been learning this week, my friends? How do you think we should treat those who take more than they give? Why do you think we need other people? What do you like to do to make the most of spring? I hope you're all going well, and staying strong! xx

  1. So, I was snuggling on the lounge, looking through old pictures and reminiscing just a little, when a notification popped up on my screen. I usually give such things a cursory glance and then continue as previously. But instead of being a random, irrelevant notice, it was a question... Your question on Google+. Though I don't actively use that social platform, it is the only way I know when you post, thanks to its announcements! And I'm grateful for them, especially tonight. You write in such an inviting, personal and disarming way!

I really resonate with your first note. That fear of the possibility of my plans and dreams crumbling into nothingness often interfers with me letting anyone know about them. But I like your conclusion to this question.
And enjoying the sunshine, without technology. I think I will deliberately do more of that now. Well, maybe not right now. But the next time the sun is shining. ;)
Thanks again for all the anode! <3

    1. Oh, I didn't know that! Thanks - I shall continue sharing them on Google+ then. :)

Yes, you worded that perfectly! I've still got so far to go in that area, but it feels huge just to acknowledge I need others. May we both grow in knowing when and how much to share! And yes, I should be sitting in the sunshine right now - it's so warm and cheerful outside. :) Thanks for your encouraging comment! I always enjoy hearing from you. :) xx

  4. These notes to self are all meaningful things to take notes of. Especially relate to number two. I agree that people struggle as well and just because they have a few bad moments doesn't mean you should just move on. People do change and they deserve second chances. Thanks for sharing Jess! <3 Have a good week!

    1. Ah, it's so good to hear you agree with number two! It's true that people change, and we would want someone to give us a second chance, so why shouldn't we extend that to others? It's something I could rant about for quite a while, haha, but I'll restrain myself (especially in light of your recent post about blogging not being the place for that)! Thanks for your comment; I hope you have a great week too! :)

  6. I can very much relate to your first note. I don't often tell people of my dreams for the future (not that I have a very clear view of them anyways) because what if I don't do that? But you're right, we need to open up to others - of course we need to open up to the right people.
I agree, we shouldn't give up on people. Often times, the ones who hurt others the most are the ones who hurt inside the most. We definitely shouldn't stay in toxic relationships, and at times we need to take a step back from some relationships and see who's influencing who. We need to love others... even if its simply biting our tongue from saying something unkind.
Yes, sometimes we need to take a break from technology and enjoy the sunshine. Where I live its officially fall (though the weather doesn't - sadly - feel like it yet) and I'm excited for cooler weather.
Something I have kept coming back to in the past few weeks is to cling to Jesus. This world is confusing, chaotic, evil, dark, messy, and sinful. But He remains constant and He is in control. Even if we don't understand we just need to cling to Him.
Thanks for sharing this, Jessica! <3

    1. Ah yes, that's exactly the struggle. When I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, I didn't notice my reluctance so much, but now I actually have something to say...but I still don't want to share it, haha. There's always areas to grow in!
That's an excellent point! There's this saying I learned in counselling: 'hurt people hurt people.' And it's so true, like you said! There are definitely boundaries, but we should show grace and love wherever possible.
Yes, I was just thinking about that this morning actually, while reading the first few verses of Psalm 71. When we have God as our constant, we don't have to be confused by the craziness around us. Thanks for sharing that beautiful lesson!
Happy autumn to you! I hope you enjoy the cooler weather when it finally gets to you. :) And thanks for your thoughtful comment, as always. I appreciate you!

  7. I love this. I feel like so many people are proclaiming people "Toxic" when all they are is humans just like us. I have a friend who people told me to stop talking to, but we worked through a lot, and its been super rewarding.
Also I can relate to your first point. Sharing about dreams is tough.
And three, yes! Time to unplug is so important.
Thank you for this reminded and encuragment!

    1. Yes, precisely! I have to admit I am frustrated with how popular an idea it seems to be these days. That's so excellent about you and your friend though! What a testament to the power of loving despite difficulties!
Thank you - I'm glad you could relate! Many blessings! :)

  13. A blog must be connected to the person in need. It is really important to understand the actual feel of such necessity and the essence of objective behind it. Author must give proper time to understand every topic before writing it.

When you comment:

1. My day will be brighter, my face smiling, and my heart blessed.

2. I’m likely to immediately go and explore your blog (if you have one) to find out more of your amazingness, and return the blessing.

3. I will then attempt to craft a response to you that will somehow fail to convey how much I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness and kindness. I’m grateful for every word of encouragement you give, and don’t be afraid to share some constructive criticism also; there’s always more to learn. In short: thank-you! :)
