God-Incidences

You know those times you suddenly notice everything God’s been up to? I was doing a few things on the internet this afternoon, when I realized God has totally been working in my life, reminding me that He’s there and He cares. And I hadn’t stopped to notice.

 - A couple of weeks ago, my family and I went to a Lifeline Book Fair. I had wanted to go to one of Lifeline’s book fairs for ages. I lined this one up, and I was really looking forward to it. A couple of days before the fair I took a peak into my bank account to see how much I could afford to spend. Because of some fees for my diploma, the sad truth was: I had twenty-five dollars to spend. Twenty-five dollars! I knew the books were second-hand, but I didn’t know how cheap they were going to be, and $25 doesn’t go very far. So I started praying. There was a textbook I had to buy, and it cost over one hundred dollars. I’d heard that there were textbooks at the fair, so I was praying that the book I needed would be there for a reduced price, which would then greatly increase my budget.

When we got to the fair, I went straight to the Psychology and Counselling section. The textbook wasn’t there. As I started browsing the other sections, I realised my money wasn’t going to go very far. The books were cheap, but there’s only five fives in twenty-five, you know. (In case you haven’t heard of my book-acquiring habits before, I go for quantity as well as quality and affordability.) I let my pile stack up anyway, and planned to have a hard ‘going through’ to narrow it down before making the purchase. When I had almost finished browsing the sections that interested me, a lady started speaking over the loudspeaker. “In fifteen minutes, the bag sale will start.” My brother and I looked at each other: What on earth is a bag sale? She went on to explain that the bag sale meant you could get everything you could fit into a normal sized shopping bag for twenty dollars. Wow! I’m not skilled at bargaining, but I was pretty sure I could fit quite a few books into one bag.

In the end, I got seventeen books for twenty dollars. Some might call it a coincidence, but I believe God answered my prayers. He cares enough about a girl’s enjoyment of books and limited budget, and chose to bless me with a reminder of His care. I mean, isn’t that amazing?! I even had five dollars to spare! :D

- Some of you might have seen my review of The True Vine on goodreads. It’s an amazing book, and was a real blessing to me. I was thinking about it as I wrote that review, and suddenly another God-incidence became apparent. That book had been sitting on our shelf for almost two years. It was given to us, and normally I would’ve checked it out immediately. But instead, I randomly picked it up a couple of weeks ago. I can’t even remember what prompted me to pick it up - I was in the middle of reading other things. But I started reading The True Vine, and I was blown away. It was exactly what I needed to read, and I think God knew that all along. Thanks God for reminding me yet again that you care about every little detail of my life. (Also, in case I haven’t implied this enough, The True Vine is an excellent book, and I recommend you read it. :)

- Over a year ago I described how God provided me with some shoes I needed (like brand new perfect, for op shop price) before I’d even had a chance to ask. Guess what? He did it again! Today I was in town, and seeing as I was alone, I decided to go to an op shop (you know, it’s never safe to leave me alone). As I looked at the shoe section – which I have never bought anything from before, by the way – a lady volunteering at the op shop came and put a couple of new pairs of shoes on the rack. One pair looked like what I had passively been wanting, and feeling I needed. Basically, I saw them and they looked nice, and quality, and brand new. I checked them and they were my size. I put them on and they fit (a rare thing for shoes to do on my feet). They were six dollars! So God did it again – catered for my desires on my budget. He’s incredible.

I’m sure there are many other blessings He’s been giving and I’ve been missing. But these just dawned on me, and I had to shout it out: God is good! But, I want to hear your stories too. :) How has God been blessing you? Have you experienced times or situations when it just had to be Him orchestrating things?

And how are you going with the 31 hugs challenge so far?

  1. Praise God for all the wonderful things He has been doing for you. I totally get what you mean about Him always being there and providing but sometimes we can tend to be too busy we don't always see it. I remember a few months ago just before my final exams (which was synoptic and essay writing) that I would be able to study the things that will come up as synoptic exams tend to cover everything we had learned for the whole year. The day before the exam God sent someone who came up to me with some past paper questions and I realised I couldnt answer those questions so I went through all the topics and behold, the next day during the exam i realised that those same past paper questions I had revised the day before were in the exam paper. God is just so amazing and faithful so I can't just even begin to explain it.
    Thanks for sharing these stories.
    God bless.

  3. That is so wonderfully amazing, Jessica!!! I've had quite a few instances like that recently and just really have been amazed and strengthened in my faith seeing how God cares about the little things as well as the big things. There are no coincidences in His kingdom! :)

  5. Aww, Jessica. Thanks for sharing these incidences and pointing us back to how incredible. our. God. is! A few times over the past months, I had a sort of unvoiced desire for some Aloe Vera plants hovering in the back of my mind (to help with my acne). I didn't want them bad enough to do anything about it, I just thought it would be nice. After visiting a mentor of mine yesterday afternoon, I came out of her front door to see something I hadn't noticed when going in. She had half a dozen or more uprooted Aloe Vera plants lying on their pavement. After I inquired of them, she told me that her and her husband were clearing them out since they had been "growing like weeds" and she offered them to me. Needless to say, I took one home and mum and I planted it in our yard.

You would think it obvious that God was orchestrating this. Nevertheless, I didn't realize it until the end of your post when you encouraged us to share our own stories. But I praise God for it now that I'm reminded of how He takes care of these little desires in our life that really have no eternal significance. Or perhaps they have more eternal significance than I thought, given that they can cause us to praise Him more.

    1. Oh, thanks for sharing that experience, Jordy! That’s a wonderful example of how God takes notice of our unspoken, and unprayed-for, desires as well! He certainly is incredible. :) On another note, I’ve found aloe vera is good for so many things! I’m sure you’ll get a lot of use out of it. :)

I like your last thought too – maybe these small experiences are of greater worth than I thought.. Thanks again for your encouraging comment!

  7. How wonderful! I have a similar experience to tell of! Last night, my sisters and I went to a monthy girls Bible study thing at our church, and our cousin has come before with us, but she hasn't the last few times. But I texted her a few minuted before we were suppose to leave, to ask of she wanted to come, and she said she would like to, but didn't have a ride, so we went to pick her up, and the lady who was speaking for the group last night, is a very dear friend of ours, and just an around awesome person, who loves everyone and everyone loves her, and she's spacey and scatter-brained and funny. So obviously our cousin loved her. Oh and she was speaking about sign language, and it turns out our cousin is interested in sign language, so they were talking afterwards, and so our cousin might go to her house once a week or something to learn sign language from our friend, if it works out, and what I'm most excited abut, is that our friend is not a Christian, as far as I know, and this is the perfect opportunity to be a light fr Christ to her, and to expose her to the gospel more often! Yay!

    1. Wow, thanks for sharing Maggie! That’s incredible how God orchestrated all those circumstances, and arranged that your friend now gets to see God in others’ lives, and hear about the gospel more often! Hopefully one day you’ll have opportunity to share with her how God was working for her salvation all along. :)

  8. Just this morning, I was trying to find a bag of candles (it's fall!!! Bring on the yummy candles!) but I couldn't find it. I was looking in every nook and cranny, places that I hadn't seen in years. And in one of those forgotten places, I came across a book of Stephen Foster songs. A while back I'd tried to plunk out Beautiful Dreamer by ear, since I'm a cheapskate but it never worked. And there in the book was Beautiful Dreamer! About five minutes after I started up the candle search, I found them, in one of the first spots I'd checked, just a little further back than I'd previously looked.
Thank you for this post! I loved reading all the stories :)

  10. This post really made me grateful for all the amazing things God has been doing in my life lately <3 "God-incidences" is the perfect word for that :) I think I had pinned once (before I gave up Pinterest XD) this quote that said "Thank you God for blessing me so much more than I deserve." LIKE YES. SO TRUE. God is so good.

    I loved reading your stories!

    1. Oh, I like that quote! We don’t deserve everything (or try, anything) He gives us. We really have got so much to be thankful for!

That’s encouraging to hear God’s been doing amazing things in your life too! Haha, I think like to think that God smiles at statements like that: Of course I’ve been doing amazing things; I’m God! Anyway, thanks so much for reading and commenting, Autumn. :)

  12. Wow...this was such a great reminder, Jessica. I enjoyed reading not only your stories but also the stories of your readers. It seems like so many of us are being blessed by God in amazing ways...but sometimes we don't even realize it!

And yes, I have another story to add. =) While this might seem like I'm bragging, please know that I'm not. This has been such a blessing to me, and I want to brag in Christ right now. ♥

I decided to start supporting a child through Compassion International last May. It's a wonderful way to help a child get out of poverty, share Jesus' love with the child, and make a friend with someone from anywhere in the world. My parents already support several children, two that I write to on a monthly basis. I have been so very blessed by receiving their precious letters and making dear friends with these girls. ♥ But anyway, I felt like God wanted me to sponsor a child on my own limited supply of funds. I don't make enough money each month to pay for the bills. I really don't! But I realized this month, almost half a year later, that somehow I have been blessed with so much more than I had before I started supporting a child. Somehow, somewhere, God has been dumping His blessings on me, and I have enough money to support sweet Camila and give more away to others! I am just overwhelmed by how much He loves me to care for me in this way. It truly is a miracle...and I learned that I can trust Him for everything in my life. ♥ I hope this proves to be a blessing to you as well. ♥

    1. Praise God! I have been really blessed by all the stories shared in the comments here too - including yours. :)

That's an amazing testimony! When He calls, He provides. And it's amazing that the more you've given, the more you have! Actually, your story is very inspiring to me personally: I've wanted to sponsor a child for long time, and I did for a short while through another organisation (not Compassion International). But it didn't have any way to communicate to the child, so it felt impersonal, and I stopped. The lack of funds has stopped me from trying again, but I should trust God and go for it.. Have you had a good experience with Compassion International? Is there anything about sponsoring through them you don't like?

Anyway, thanks so much for reading, commenting, and sharing, Hosanna! Your story was definitely a blessing. :) xx

    2. No, I can't think of anything that I have disliked about Compassion International. =) I now have three best friends who speak only Spanish. =) Compassion is really good about sending pictures every time you give a special gift and making sure that you receive at least three letters a year. I have LOVED sponsoring these precious children. ♥ You also occasionally receive letters from pastors/teachers who are important in your sponsored child's life. It has been a huge blessing. =)

  13. Seventeen books for 20 doller sound miracle to me..
I feel completely surrounded by God .
Since I start thinking that i can think I realised his presence in my life and he has been always with me each step .
He heard me whenever I called him and even then when i forgot to call him for help .
My life is ful of miracles and I have therefore great sense of gratitude in my each breath for him .
I feel that the realization of his presence around us is most important and most precious gift of God for one

When you comment:

1. My day will be brighter, my face smiling, and my heart blessed.

2. I’m likely to immediately go and explore your blog (if you have one) to find out more of your amazingness, and return the blessing.

3. I will then attempt to craft a response to you that will somehow fail to convey how much I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness and kindness. I’m grateful for every word of encouragement you give, and don’t be afraid to share some constructive criticism also; there’s always more to learn. In short: thank-you! :)
