Be Fearless in the Pursuit of What Sets Your Soul on Fire

Rachel from Silver Mess, and Grace from Totally Graced recently shared posts where they challenged themselves to share a memory in one hundred words. I thought it was a great idea, and decided to condense what I wanted to share into one hundred words. My posts normally run between five to eight hundred words, so you can imagine I understand the ‘challenge’ part of it. I didn’t quite make it down to one hundred, but anyway, here’s my current inspiration on being passionate. I’m looking forward to hearing what you make of passion, and tell me if you try the one hundred word challenge!

My music teacher advised: pursue your passion. If it doesn’t work out, go study law. But if it does, you spend your life doing what you love.

Sara Beth said passion is God given; it’s how we’re created to exist. She quoted La La Land: “People love what other people are passionate about.”

Ove’s wife says in A Man Called Ove: “We can busy ourselves with living or with dying...”

Why settle for okay when you could be excited, on fire, spending and being spent, living up, wearing out, but you love it. You’re alive. You’re doing what you’re made for.

I’m re-evaluating:  am I doing it because I’m obliged, because it happened, or because I feel called, I fervently desire, I have excitement, enthusiasm, recklessly brave abandon, not to spend my life on something, but to give my life for something?

The world needs passionate people.

  4. Absolutely beautiful, Jessica!! What a good reminder. The world does need more passionate people—people who are not afraid to show that they actually care about something. What a powerful set of 100 words. <3

    1. Thanks Soph! Yes - it kind of links back to insecurity doesn't it?! It's about casting off fear and following our calling. Thanks for mentioning that; now I have a whole new train of thought to pursue. :) I'm so glad it spoke to you, and thanks for always being here. xx

  5. This speaks so much truths on so many levels. As someone pondering what to do with their future (maybe environmental engineering with a minor in creative writing or English and public speaking), you've prompted more questions for me to figure out, but you have reminded me to go for something I'm passionate about, so thank you for that.

    1. It can be so hard to know what to do! It sounds like you have some great ideas and interests to pursue though. Yes, life is too short to be doing something we're not enthusiastic about.

Thanks for reading and commenting, Abby, and all the best with your future. Keep pursuing what makes you come alive! xx

  12. Great post!! 'The world needs passionate people' - that's true! And even more it needs people who are passionate about Jesus! Passion is underrated, a lot of the time we lack enthusiasm. But we just need to find what we're passionate about and let it shine through!

    1. Yes, yes! And I think passion for Jesus will be the most 'passionate passion' because really, that's the Holy Spirit working in us. And God's spirit - how much more can it get?!

I agree. Let's be passionate people for Him! Thanks for reading and commenting, girl! xx

  14. Wow...This post is straight fire. Love it! There is something so impactful about the brevity of these words and the pictures they paint. Your music teacher is very wise, and so are you! These lines killed me. Thank you for sharing!! :)

PS. I've been meaning to read A Man Called Ove, is it any good? :)

    1. Yes, even a single word can carry so much. I need to learn how to make each one count! My music teacher is awesome - she teaches me so much more than music. :)

A Man Called Ove is a delightful book. It has quite a lot of profanity unfortunately, but you can't help but love the characters and the way they develop. Let me know what you think when you get to read it!

Thanks for commenting, Erin. It's so nice to hear from you!

  16. So I have a list on my phone I started where I write down little quotes and thoughts under different categories, just so when I need some help in a area, and I literally copied a line from your post under my "Motivation" category.

    THIS IS INSPIRING, GIRL.

  17. Really cool challenge and I love what you did with it! I recently had a conversation with my sister about being passionate. She was concerned she wasn't knowledgeable enough to properly convey Bible stories to the kids she watches on Friday nights. I told her that so long as she's passionate about the Bible and the stories she reads to them, the kids won't care if she doesn't know how to explain substitutionary atonement.

    1. I thought it was a great challenge too (especially for me, considering my long winded tendencies!).

Man, you make an excellent point. People are going to remember how excited you are about something, and the enthusiasm will make them want to look into it themselves. Besides, God has this awesome way of making His word come alive regardless of our presentation! Thanks so much for sharing! xx

When you comment:

1. My day will be brighter, my face smiling, and my heart blessed.

2. I’m likely to immediately go and explore your blog (if you have one) to find out more of your amazingness, and return the blessing.

3. I will then attempt to craft a response to you that will somehow fail to convey how much I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness and kindness. I’m grateful for every word of encouragement you give, and don’t be afraid to share some constructive criticism also; there’s always more to learn. In short: thank-you! :)
