Book Review|| The Vow

Last week a friend lent me a book named The Vow, by Kim and Krickett Carpenter. I had heard of it before, but hadn’t read it.

Kim and Krickett got to know each other when Kim placed an order for athletic jackets with the company Krickett was working for. They spent many hours talking to each other on the phone, and then in person.  Just over a year later they married, and started living happily ever after.

But, two months after the wedding, as they were travelling to have Thanksgiving with Krickett’s parents, they had a car accident. Kim soon recovered from his minor injuries, but Krickett had a major head injury, and lay in a coma for weeks. She had suffered some brain damage, and lost part of her memory. Among the memories she lost, was her meeting of Kim, their wedding, and their honeymoon. She didn’t even know who Kim was.

Kim tried his very best to help Krickett out in her rehabilitation, and try somehow to jog Krickett’s memory of him. She didn’t appreciate his input, and they often got into arguments.

But through everything, Krickett didn’t lose her faith in God. People had told her that Kim was her husband, and she truly wanted to keep the vow she made to Kim, I promise to be faithful to you, to love you in good times and bad…

Kim still loved Krickett as well, and couldn't imagine leaving her, as some of his friends had suggested.  Through a process of time, and some counselling, Kim and Krickett Carpenter fell in love once more, and had another wedding ceremony. They went on to have two children, and share their story with people all over the world.

This book is a true story, and worth reading. :)

Book Review|| Bridge Called Hope

Just a few days ago, I finished reading a book by Kim Meeder, called Bridge of Hope.

Kim Meeder and her husband Troy run a ranch called Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch, in Oregon. They rescue abused, mistreated and dying horses; help them recover, and then pair them with children in need. (You can see their website here)

This book is full of touching, inspiring, and real stories about horses and the way they have touched the hearts and lives of hurting children and youth.  It is written in a very easy to read style and often include words of wisdom, such as ‘Hope is like a sky full of stars…whether we see them or not doesn’t change the fact that they are there. Truly, it is not until the night is at its very darkest…that we see them shine the most clearly.’

 In one story, Kim rescued this tiny neglected horse, which others would’ve thought was beyond hope, and loved it back to health. This same horse loved its way into the heart of a young man who had never known what it was like to be loved before… and changed his life.

The stories in this book really reiterated to me the fact that true Christian love will find a way into people’s hearts which by other ways would be impossible. And that nothing, or no one can ever go beyond hope.

I found this book to be really worth reading, and although it’s hard to summarize, it is a really good book, suitable for youth and adults.

A Thought on Prayer

This morning in our study time, a comment on prayer was made, that really got me thinking. The comment was ‘Maybe we don’t ask enough.’ Jesus tells us in John 14:14  ‘If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.’ And then He says in John 16:24  ‘Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.’ Think about it. We say ‘Oh, God doesn't answer my prayers.’ But have we asked for anything? Specifically?

Maybe He just didn't answer them the way we wanted, or expected. But He always answers them for our good. In fact, ‘God never leads His children otherwise than they would choose to be led, if they could see the end from the beginning and discern the glory of the purpose which they are fulfilling as co-workers with Him.’  {MH 479.2}

So, I want to encourage you, (like I am encouraging myself) to ask God for more, so that we can receive more, and our ‘joy may be full.’ J
